How to Find Time to Read When Life Feels Too Busy?
I’ve been there many times — work piling up, family responsibilities, social commitments, and the constant pull of my phone. Reading would get pushed to the bottom of the list, sometimes for weeks. I used to think I needed big blocks of free time to read properly, but that almost never happened.
Then I stopped waiting for the perfect moment and started stealing small pockets of time instead. The surprising result? I began reading more than I ever had during my less busy periods. Here’s how I do it now.
Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions
This was my biggest shift. I used to tell myself “I’ll read when things calm down” or “I need a quiet evening with no distractions.” But life rarely calms down completely.
Instead, I started reading in the imperfect moments:
While waiting for coffee to brew in the morning
During my commute or daily walk
In the 15 minutes before bed instead of scrolling
These small windows add up faster than you expect.
Turn Everyday Activities Into Reading Opportunities
Some of my best reading happens while doing other things:
Listening to audiobooks while folding laundry, cooking, or driving
Reading on my phone during short breaks at work
Keeping a physical book in the bathroom (yes, really — it works)
I don’t do this all the time, but having the option removes the “I have no time” excuse.
Protect Tiny Pockets of Time
I started treating 20-minute reading blocks as important as meetings. I put them in my calendar and protect them:
One short session in the morning
One in the evening before screens
Even on extremely busy days, I try to protect at least one of them. Some days I only manage 10 pages. That’s still progress.
Make Reading Easier Than Not Reading
I removed as much friction as possible:
Kindle always charged and within reach
Next book ready before I finish the current one
Audiobook queued up for when my hands are busy
When reading is the easiest option in a free moment, I naturally choose it more often.
Be Honest About Where Your Time Actually Goes
I did a honest audit one week and realized I was spending nearly two hours a day on social media and random videos. Redirecting even half of that time to reading made a massive difference.
You don’t need to cut everything fun out of your life. Just reclaim some of the low-value time and turn it into something nourishing.
My Current Busy-Life Reading Rhythm
Even during intense work periods, I usually manage to finish 3-5 books per month by:
Using audiobooks for movement time
Reading short chapters in the morning
Allowing myself “easy” books when I’m mentally tired
It’s not perfect, but it’s sustainable.
The Gentle Reminder
If life feels too busy for reading right now, that’s okay. Be kind to yourself. The joy of reading is still waiting whenever you’re ready to invite it back in small, gentle ways.
You don’t need hours of free time. You only need a few consistent moments and the willingness to use them.
Start with just one small pocket today — maybe 10 minutes before bed. See how it feels. You might discover that reading fits into your busy life more easily than you thought.
